Buy this as a sticker!

It’s been ages since I’ve done one of these! I haven’t even done Moira yet… Or D.Va… Or Mei… or Ana… Eh. I’ll get to them one day. The hype for Overwatch has been sustained for quite a while now, it’s kind of amazing. While Destiny 2 already feels like it’s going into its winter years, Overwatch is still triggering social media every time a new skin is released. Personally I don’t rush back to it much, except just recently with friends. I’m more likely to be found playing PUBG or Avernum.

I got back into contact with Avernum after about 14 years of completely forgetting the games name and desperately trying to find it. I remember playing it at about the same time Mmhmm came out (which got a tenth-anniversary edition in 2014) and while painting my Games Workshop Legolas miniature which still gets use in a D&D campaign I’m involved in.

Anyway, Avernum was on a demo disc that my friend got from Armageddon. I remember being charmed by how easy the game was to get involved in. Most turn-based RPGs were convoluted and stale. Avernum, on the other hand, was relatively quick and item management was simple. It even has a “junk bag” feature where you can suck up an entire towns supply of brooms and rocks into a separate sack so you don’t get your proper inventory messed up.

Anyway, It was just a demo, and I forgot about the game for a while. Then suddenly one day I had to play it again. But I didn’t know the name, and have you ever tried googling “top down turn based RPG” into image search to try and find a shareware game from 15 years ago before? It’s impossible. I rang my mate, asked him if he remembered, or still had the demo disc, but to no avail. I gave up. Then an article on Penny Arcade by Tycho made me randomly follow a game devs blog because it was a great read.

Three months down the line he posted an article about how he’s releasing his third game for the third time. Halfway through his article a screenshot he posted triggered my memory, or at least the shitty character portraits did. Holy shit, It’s the game I lost 15 years ago! Right in front of me this whole time, and getting fucking remastered to boot. 14-year-old Izak had taste!

So yeah, you should totally get the demo and give it a jam. It’s entertaining as hell! Hard though, so don’t forget to save after every battle. Personally I went straight to the second one, cause that’s the one I felt like I had played back then.

Sephone Studies

I did a bunch of pieces of Sephone, who was the scifi tech noir chick from a couple weeks back. I originally shared them on twitter. but everything just disappears there and I’m conscious that some day I’m gonna want an easy way of looking back at these.

Below is the first one I did, and is what I used to give Kristof an idea of the sort of world I wanted to create. He took it from there and we fleshed out the world a little more together. He’d ask me questions and any I didn’t have any specific answers to he filled in.

I’ve been doing these portraits a lot recently, and I really enjoyed giving her a more round face, it just never ended up happening in the final comic though, But I guess sharp features are more representative of who she is as a character than this baby face version.

I loved the colour palette so much I had to have a go and see how it looked in my old pixel art style. Not that bad.

Min Min – Arms

Buy the sticker here!

I’m loving the new IP’s Nintendo has been working on. Their art direction with Splatoon and ARMS is awesome. They just need to keep this pace up. Min Min was the most requested character after I initially did Twintelle.

Yesterday we got back from Tauranga Zinefest. It was an awesome weekend seeing mates and selling merch. People really dug our prints. I really need to get them onto our online store. People also loved Becky’s handmade ceramics, which we might also be chucking into the store soon.

Keira Hagai – Jak & Daxter

This pixel girl came as a suggestion from Rachel, someone who dug through my google doc, and found it wanting. I recommend that you should do the same! I’ve been off my game keeping the doc up to date, so you’ll probably see a lot of new kick ass female protagonists who haven’t made it onto the doc yet.

Here’s Keira, and trust me, you don’t want to image search her. Time has not been kind to those old Playstation graphics.

Buy this as a sticker right now!

Marina – Splatoon 2 Pixel Art

I did an Inkling way back in 2015, and I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with how that ink blaster gun turned out. Not so much the legs, but oh well.

Marina has been causing a stir on social for being a colour other than white, which is pretty cool. I can never decide whether I think that the design of Splatoon is totally bad ass, or kind of just fucked up. Anyway, here’s Marina!

Twintelle – Arms 8Bit Pixel Art

Want a sticker of this? I can do that!

Twintelle jumped onto the scene recently as a newly announced character that will be available in ARMS, the upcoming Nintendo Switch game.

ARMS comes across as a little bit of a gimmick game, even though I’ve been told by someone who’s had first hand experience with it that it isn’t. It’s been hard for a lot of the fans to get overly hyped either way. Despite that, the release of Twintelle and her giant butt has been exactly what the game has needed to get social media cranking out the fan art.

ARMS won’t be a day one purchase for me, but I’ll definitely have it on my list. I’ve got the Global Test Punch installed on my Switch but I haven’t had a chance to log in and play yet.

I’m currently waiting for my copy of Bomberman to ship as well.

In the meantime I might draw the rest of the girls in the lineup, and if you really dig what I do then maybe buy a sticker.

Nier Automata – 2B – 8bit Pixel Art

I came out of retirement to bring you 2B, from Nier Automata, a game released by Square Enix earlier in the year for the PS4, and just the other day on PC. I might pick it up as a gift to myself after the wedding, depending on whether I find something cooler in the meantime.

You can now buy this as a sticker!

The game has three playable characters, but I think YoRHa No.2 Type B (2B) is everyone’s favourite. The other two are YoRHa No. 9 Type S (9S) and YoRHa Type A No.2 (A2) who I might draw later.

the main controversy of the game came when a photoshopped screengrab from the trailer gave 2b a rather accurate butthole, brown circle and all. The original image was just a regular panty shot you can expect from any Japanese made game.

However the game designer yoko Taro couldn’t help but make fun of the situation. From a translated tweet he said this:

“Due to the 2B butt controversy, many outrageous drawings are being made. Collecting them to share individually is a pain. I’d like it if I could get them sent in a zip file every week.”

Of course, when you leave a challenge like that floating out for your fans to collect you zips full of Hentai the people were more than willing to oblige.

“After saying ‘send me zips of 2B art’ word got around and I actually got a zip. The Internet is great.”

Nimona – 8Bit Pixel Art

I started drawing an Oglaf character and got bored and decided to do Nimona instead.

We have the book on our shelf at home, making it one of the first webcomic-to-actual-comics we’ve owned (apart from some stuff from Ryan Andrews).

Nimona 8bit pixel art girl comic book character hero

However, for a best selling book the paper stock and quality was pretty shit. I’m not as qualified as Becky to talk about it though (as she deals with print and paper all day long and I wank around on WordPress mostly these days). She has a fantastic rant about it which I can thoroughly recommend to anyone. Maybe I can make her do a follow up post about it.

Apparently Fox Animation has breathlessly scooped up the rights to make Nimona a movie. So there’s something to look forward to I suppose.

Starfire – 8Bit Pixel Art

Carrying on from Harley Quinn from a couple days ago I bring you Starfire, as suggested by Twitter.

starfire sexy 8bit pixel art new 52 costume reboot

I went with her re-rebooted new 52 costume, because the last one was 90% pasties.

These controversies always reminds me of a scene in The Boys where a newly inaugurated female super hero is told that her costume isn’t sexy enough, and is made to chop a huge hole out of her costume for toy sales and her male colleagues.

I hugely recommend The Boys, it has the best take on super heroes for people who think super heroes are a bit flat.

And also it has Simon Pegg in it.
